WHY IT’S OK NOT TO SHARE RAW FILES WITH CLIENTS

As photographers, our RAW files are like the ingredients to a recipe—important, but not the finished dish. Here’s why it’s completely okay (and standard practice!) to keep those files to ourselves:

📸 RAW files are unfinished
Think of RAW files as the unpolished foundation of an image. They lack the color grading, retouching, and overall magic that makes your photos unique to your style. Sharing them can misrepresent your art.

🎨 Editing is part of the art
The editing process is where the creative vision comes alive. Without it, the photos are incomplete, much like an artist handing over a sketch instead of a finished painting.

🤝 Trust the process
When clients hire a photographer, they’re investing in their expertise, artistic style, and ability to deliver polished, professional images—not just a collection of unprocessed files.

💾 RAW files are huge
Technically speaking, RAW files are massive and often require specialized software to even view them. Sharing them can be impractical and overwhelming for clients.

🖋️ Contracts Matter
Most professional contracts clarify this upfront. The client receives the edited, high-resolution images, ensuring they get exactly what they need without the confusion of RAW files.

Remember, every photographer works differently, but holding on to your RAW files isn’t about withholding; it’s about protecting your artistic integrity and ensuring your clients see your work in its best light.
